The modern world is a veritable smorgasbord of options, from the seemingly mundane (choosing a pair of jeans) to the life-altering (selecting a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan). But according to Barry Schwartz, an emeritus psychology professor at Swarthmore University, this abundance of choices can be a double-edged sword. In my opinion, the idea that more choice is always better is a deeply ingrained belief in Western culture, but research suggests that it can lead to anxiety, indecision, and paradoxically, less happiness. What makes this particularly fascinating is that the brain is designed to conserve energy, and making decisions requires more mental effort than relying on memory. This is why people often move through their days on autopilot, taking the same route to work or choosing the same brand of jam at the grocery store. From my perspective, the proliferation of choices has also become intertwined with identity in the social media age, where everyone can easily compare their choices to others. This raises a deeper question: are we really happier with more choices, or are we just more anxious and indecisive? One thing that immediately stands out is that Schwartz's research has shown that having too many options can lead to paralysis, where people feel overwhelmed and unable to make a decision. This is especially true for maximizers, who aim for the best and fear that there is always a better alternative. However, this isn't true for everyone in every situation. Car buffs, for example, will gladly dive into the details of nearly unlimited choice when buying a new car. But when it comes to buying jam, most people will settle for a few options and move on. What this really suggests is that we need to limit our choices and satisfice, or set good-enough criteria for decisions and move on. This is the approach taken by David Epstein, who limits his opportunities for making choices, such as buying 10 of the same well-fitting T-shirts in different colors. In my opinion, this is a wise strategy, as it can help reduce mental noise and free up time and energy for other tasks. However, it's important to note that changing our decision-making habits is difficult, especially for those who have trouble making decisions. But as Schwartz acknowledges, it's worth it in the long run, as we become more satisfied with our decisions and have more time to pursue other interests.
